How to travel around Smolyan There's an excellent and regular bus and minibus service to Pamporovo and other interesting towns and villages nearby and they're all geared up for ski equipment. In Bulgaria, taxis are very cheap, especially if shared.
How to get to the region You can reach the region by bus or by car. There's a bus 6 times a day from Sofia Central Bus Station (near Sofia Central Railway Station) that goes to Smolyan, passing Pamporovo and another ski town, Chepelare. Travel by train is possible as far as Plovdiv. Ryanair flies to Plovdiv and so guests can use the hourly bus from there. Hiring a car in Bulgaria is easy, there are many companies offering this service and the prices are very cheap compared with the UK.
How to visit Aegean Sea from Smolyan It's possible to hire a car, visit the beautiful Aegean Sea Coast, enjoy a day on the beach and return the same day. That's because it's only a 1½ hour drive away. Visit Kavala and cross over on a ferry to the lovely island of Thasos.
How to get to Bulgaria You can fly to Sofia airport with dozens of international carriers. EasyJet and Wizzair fly to BG also. As mentioned before, Ryanair flies to Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria. The advantage is that it's only 55 miles from Smolyan as compared to 150 from Sofia. You can also come to BG by train - Bulgaria is on one of the main international routes and there are services to and from most European cities.
An idea for a future B&B business A business idea for future B&B owners could be to offer a package price that includes transfer to and from the airport. There are many variations on this theme. Bus operators offer very reasonable, luxury, air conditioned transport from Sofia and Plovdiv airports directly to the house. |
